Sheffield Genetic Literacy Project

Sheffield Genetic Literacy Project is a part of the Sheffield Infant mortality strategy and is currently funded by the Sheffield City Council. The project aims to raise awareness of close cousin marriages and recessive genetic conditions amongst families who practice close cousin marriages.

Our project has had a positive impact not only locally but also nationally. Our promotional video has been used to raise awareness in Sheffield, Rotherham, Bradford, Kirklees and Luton. We have also presented at the European conference organised by the Lancet Journal.

We work very closely with members of the community and also with health professionals such as Health Visitors, Midwives and GP’s. We provided basic training to health professionals and organisations in Sheffield through our Train the Trainers workshops. This allows others to use our video and run workshops in the community.

Mental Health Work

Firvale Community Hub works on a number of mental health projects which we have successfully built on our Time To Change toolkit which we developed in Partnership with Sheffield MIND.  We run a social café in partnership with SOAR and Sheffield Mind. We also deliver peer support sessions as part of the mental health transformation fund and the Covid-19 response fund. We have seen an increase in referrals to these groups and sessions since the start of the pandemic. We work very closely with MIND and our mental health peer support workers to ensure we are meeting the needs of the BAME community in this difficult and uncertain time. Our peer support workers run online sessions and are available most days to talk to individuals on a 1:1 basis.

We are hoping to break the stigma and negativity attached to mental health by encouraging more people to come forward, talk and ask for help without fearing the community stigma. We hope that our projects will normalise talking and sharing experiences and encourage individuals and communities to help each other when they see anyone struggling.

We also have a particular focus on BME men and their mental health and have a suicide prevention project running.

Building better lives

This project was set up to serve disadvantaged communities and address health inequalities within BAME people over 50. The overall aim of the project is to reduce social isolation and address prominent health issues that affect these communities. We work in partnership with and sub contract to 2 other BAME organisations in the city.
