Building Better Lives

The project is aimed at men and women over 50 from BME backgrounds. The objectives of the project include improving health literacy, improving well being, reducing social isolation and loneliness, reducing inequalities to accessing other services and allowing this group to feel engaged in and in control of their health and well-being.

We have run fortnightly sessions on chronic pain, mental health awareness, dementia, general health checks, diabetes, blood pressure awareness, nutrition and healthy eating advice. We also include a physical activity once a month.

We organise trips to local parks and points of interest.

We encourage members to become more independent and be able to attend other services/groups/activities that will benefit them.

If you would like to attend the sessions which are held twice a month for men and twice a month for women then please get in touch with Saima Ahmed, Community Development Worker at Firvale Community Hub on saima@pacacentre.org.uk

Women's Cleethorpes Trip Tuesday 31st July 2018

Firvale Community Hub took a group of women from the Muslim Elders Support Project on a day trip to Cleethorpes. The trip was organised following a need to improve wellbeing and social isolation and loneliness. The day trip planning and delivery engaged the members of the project and included volunteers, ex members who are now volunteers for the group.

This activity increased awareness and involvement in the local community, reduced inequalities to access services and provided opportunity to control physical and mental health and wellbeing. It enabled members to build better relationships with one another and worked to words becoming independent with in the community.

This outdoor physical activity was a collective decision made by the members and was thoroughly enjoyed by the group. The member’s feedback was lovely as they felt refreshed, valued and integrated in society.

They stated that it made them feel independent and gave them a break from their daily routines.  It is difficult for them to arrange such day trips away and were every grateful for the opportunity to have a platform to meet and  encourage each other to make better informed choices.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park -

Firvale Community Hub organised a trip for the ladies that attend the over 50's group and also the health and well being group.

The ladies enjoyed a day out to Yorkshire sculpture Park. Where they enjoyed the beautiful weather, outdoor walking, seeing the amazing sculptures and of course a 3 course picnic amongst friends.

None of the women had been to the sculpture park before and found it very interesting and entertaining!

Womens EID Party

Firvale community Hub hosted an Eid party for the women that attend the Muslim Elders project and the Health and Nutrition Project.

The women came together to enjoy an afternoon of music, henna and of course yummy food.

It was a good opportunity for women from our different projects to meet and interact with each other and have a fun filled afternoon.

For more information on the Elders project please contact Saima Ahmed and for the Health and Nutrition project please contact Rhona Sanders.
